Bombardier Norman Macfarlane MiD (Service No:2257) enlisted in the AIF on 18 August 1914 (Sergeant), and was attached to 3rd Field Artillery Brigade Ammunition Column on 25 September 1914 when he embarked with his Unit from Pinkenba Wharf in Brisbane for Egypt on board HT A22 Rangatira. Bombardier Macfarlane was awarded a Mention in Despatches on 5 November 1915 (London Gazette, Commonwealth Gazette) ' for acts of conspicuous gallantry or valuable service during period 6 May to 28 June 1915' (AWM).
Norman was born in Brisbane QLD in 1893, eighth of thirteen children of John Kerr Macfarlane (b1852 in Dumbartonshire, Scotland) and Christina Smellie Young (b1853 in Lanarkshire, Scotland). John (a Shipwright) and Christina (a Dressmaker) married in 1881 in Lancashire, England. Both arrived in Australia in 1884 - John as a Mariner on board the Mt Lebanon and Christine with two children on board the Duke of Argyll. The family settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family. In 1995 John was Caretaker at the Brisbane Amateur Sailing Club and was known as 'a boat builder, ship's carpenter and general handyman around boats' (Trove; 1895). In the 1890s John was a ferry leaseholder (Bulimba Steam Ferry and Hamilton Apollo Ferry), and a Gas Rates Collector and Insurance Agent - he and Christina also ran Macfarlane's Refreshment Kiosk and Boat Repair Yard by the Brisbane River. From the 1890s John was Boat Builder.
Norman completed a five year apprenticeship with Wilson & Smith Falkner, and was Motor Boat Engineer at Breakfast Creek in Brisbane when he enlisted in the Army.
