His father was 2576 Private Alfred Hansen 44th Battalion AIF, who enlisted at 39 years of age and returned to Australia during 1919.

His uncles, his father’s brothers, 4234 Gunner Frank Hansen 102nd Howitzer Battery, 2nd Field Artillery Brigade was killed in action in Belgium 1 August 1917, aged 28 and 1401 Sergeant Lawrence Hansen 1st Australian Field Artillery Brigade was killed in action in Belgium 30 September 1917, aged 30.
