LEVEL-CROSSING FATALITY
Car Hurled Thirty Feet.
CRASHES INTO EAST-WEST
EXPRESS.
Man Killed; Another Injured.
BALLARAT, Wednesday.— A motor car containing two passengers crashed into the transcontinental express at the Bungaree level crossing this moaning. One was killed outright, and the other is in the Ballarat Hospital in a serious condition The victims were:—
KILLED.
EMANUEL BERNSTEIN, 45 years, Traveller, 2 Grey street, East Melbourne.
INJURED.
ALBERT E. R. ALLEN, 40 years, 101 Green street, Richmond. Injuries to head and body; condition critical.
The car was driven by Bernstein, and the two men were travelling from Melbourne to Ballarat in a new Oldsmobile touring car with sample bags from the Brunswick Bag Company. Just after the express en route to Melbourne had passed through Bungaree station, making over 40 miles an hour, the car, containing the two men, was seen to approach the crossing at a rapid rate. Apparently the driver of  the car noticed the train too late. The brakes were applied some 60 feet from the crossing, but seemingly did not hold. The car dashed headlong into the mail carriage bogie next to the two engines  with a frightful crash. Dragged for some yards the crumpled car was hurled, with the two men, nearly 30 feet over the cattle pit on to the branch track. Both men were found lying near the torn and  twisted wreckage of the vehicle. Bernstein was apparently killed in the impact. The train was stopped and help was promptly forthcoming. The express, proceeded after half an hour's delay. Dr. W. Sloss gave medical attention to Allen, who war, unconscious, and had him removed by ambulance to the Ballarat Hospital.
The matter was reported to the coroner, Mr. P.H.V. Elilliget. P.M., and an inquest will be held. The Bungaree level crossing bears an unenviable record for accidents. More than one motor fatality has  occurred there. On the Ballnrat side the view is fairly good, but on the other the margin is much reduced by buildings adjacent to the station.
