Biography contributed by John Oakes

Alexander MANSON was born on 2nd November 1885 at Dalcharn Tongue (near Thurso), Sutherlandshire, Scotland. He emigrated to Australia when he was 25-years-old, but his family remained in Scotland. On 18th June 1912 he joined the NSW Government Railways and Tramways as a tram conductor (casual) and on 30th December 1912 his position was made permanent. On 30th April 1915 he was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces.

The date that he joined the AIF was 13th April 1915. He joined with the rank of Private (Service Number 2170A) and was posted to the 3rd Infantry Battalion. He nominated his mother, Sophia Manson of Edinburgh, Scotland, as his next of kin. At the time he enlisted he was living at Waverley in Sydney.

Alexander embarked for the Gallipoli Campaign aboard HMAT A63 ‘Karoola’ at Sydney on 16th June 1915. He was taken on strength of the 3rd Infantry Battalion at Gallipoli on 4th August 1915.

About a week after arriving at Gallipoli he was reported as missing in action between 7th and 12th August 1915. A Court of Enquiry held in June 1916 confirmed he had been killed in action between those dates.

As his grave site is unknown, he is commemorated at the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula, Canakkale Province, Turkey. The Australian War Memorial gives his place of association in Australia as Waverley, Sydney, NSW.

After his death his mother was granted a pension of £2 per fortnight with effect from 12th October 1915.
