Ernest James Poole was the son of Harry and Elizabeth Poole, of Poowong, Victoria. He and his younger brother Harry both enlisted on 5 June 1916, in the 2nd Pioneer Battalion.
His brother 2423 Pte. Harry Poole was killed in action only a month after his brother. Harry was also killed in action in Belgium on 21 October 1917, aged 23.
Ernest James joined the 2nd Pioneer Battalion during November 1916 and served on the Western Front for almost 12 months before he was killed. He was farming before the war and was known as ‘Jim’ Poole to his family and friends.
