Son of John Varney and Fanny Varney nee Park of Lock Street, Coburg, Victoria. Brother of Edgar Varney who returned to Australia on 15 October 1919 having served with the 28th Battalion.

Commenced return to Australia on 24 September 1918 at Toaranto, Italy aboard HT Kaiser-a-Hind disembarking on 23 November 1918
