Letter to his Mother

On the 23.6.16 Harold Gebert sent a message to his Mother written on a Cigarette Card
Dear Mother just a line to let you know I am quite well and having a good time so far. I am not short of paper. Raining today,may be going to England soon on leave. I am not into it yet but hope to be soon. Love to all and yourself. I remain your ever loving son Harold.
One of the Pirie Boys was killed the other day his name was Samy Shin

Harold Mayo GEBERT was born at Wilmington to Adolph and Martha GEBERT (nee SIMMS). 

Harold Mayo GEBERT joined the AIF on 12.08.1915 and was given service number 3752.    Attested into the 12th reinforcements of the 10th Battalion.   Prior to WW1, spent 3 years with ‘A’ Squadron, A Troop of the Lighthorse

On 01.10.1915, he embarked for France via Alexandria and joined the battalion in France.   He is noted to have served at Hazebrouck, France.

On 01.10.16, he faced a military court martial in Belgium accused of carelessly wounding himself for which he received 56 days field punishment.

He remained in France attached to Administration Headquarters.

On 27.09.1917, he was transferred to ANZAC HQ in England

He was discharged from the AIF on 15.08.1917 in London and it was noted on his file that he was permanently unfit for general service.

It appears he remained in London and was living at 76 Cambridge St.   He was given a silver war badge and a discharge certificate.  He was awarded the 1914/15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal

Prior to leaving England, on 15.08.1918 he married Georgette Yvonne BASSERY  (01.04.1895-16.01.1970) in Amiens, France. Georgette was a French citizen.

He rejoined the AIF on 16.04.1942 in WW2 being given service number S72045 for service with the 6th Battalion, Volunteer Defence Corps.   He was discharged on 18.10.1943.
