Biography contributed by Larna Malone

Alfred John Allingham was born in 1892 in Golden Square, Sandhurst (i.e. Bendigo), the 3rd born child of John Locke Allingham and Jessie Allen.   The family lived in Golden Square, where John Locke Allingham was a Storekeeper and Accountant.   The children attended the Golden Square Methodist Sunday School.

In 1896 his father purchased a property on the main Murray road in Epsom and commenced operations as an orchardist.   he continued working as an accountant and became Company Secretary of the Bendigo Pottery Company.   He was also a Methodist Lay Preacher.

Alfred John Allingham attended Huntly State School and Epsom Methodist Sunday School.   In 1912 he worked as a Gardener, renting 4.5 acres in Epsom.   The following year the Pottery Company transferred his father to Melbourne and the family began a move to Box Hill where a property was purchased and developed as an orchard.   Alfred John moved to NSW where he was employed as an electrician.

On 11 October, 1915, in Holdsworth, NSW, Alfred John Allingham enlisted for service in the AIF.   he was appointed to 3rd Reinforcements 5th Field Artillery Brigade as a Gunner, Service No. 11442.   He embarked for overseas on 15 January, 1916, per HMAS Osterley.

In Egypt he was TOS 2nd Division Artillery Column.   An injury to his elbow resulted in admission to hospital in Heliopolis for a short period and then he was transferred back to 5th FAB.   He embarked for France, disembarking in Marseilles on 25th March, 1916.   On May 13th he was transferred back to 2nd Division Artillery Column.   He was attached to 2nd Division Artillery HQ on 30th May.   He was promoted to Bombardier on 15th November, but reverted to Gunner at his own request on 8th May, 1917.   He was transferred to 26th Battalion on the same day.

In October, 1917, he accidentally injured an ankle and was again admitted to hospital.   He was appointed L/Cpl on 28th December, 1917.    On 30th March, 1918, he was transferred to 2nd Division Signal Company.

On 21 December, 1918, he was admitted to hospital in France, suffering from Diptheria.   He was transferred to hospital in England from which he was discharged on 18 February, 1919.   He embarked at Devonport for RTA per Armagh, disembarking in Australia on 18th May, 1919.   He was discharged from the AIF on 10th July, 1919.

Following discharge Alfred John Allingham joined the Allingham family at 22 Kangerong Rd, Box Hill, where he worked with his father on the orchard.   He continued working at the orchard after the death of his father in 1922.   His mother died in 1941.

He Married Iris Tipper in 1949.   They had no children and, after retirement, the orchard was sold and they moved to Mont Albert.   Alfred John Allingham was a member of the Box Hill Historical Society and served as Secretary for many years.   He died in May, 1971, and was buried in the Box Hill Cemetery as L Cpl Alfred John Allingham.    Plot M - 197 - 0055
