Son of Robert John Oates-Lennox and Elizabeth Julia Oates of Calcutta, India

Husband of Annie Oates-Lennox nee Gorman of Crown Street, Darlinghurst, NSW. Robert and Annie married in Rockhampton, QLD on 1 April 1890. 

Previously served with the 2nd Battalion York & Lancastershire Regiments for six years.

Commenced return to Australia on 25 August 1917 aboard HT Benalla disembarking on 27 October 1917
