Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

John was the eldest of four children of James Webster (born at sea en route to Victoria in 1952) and Sarah Ann Snowdon (b1856 at Golden Gully in Bendigo, Victoria). John - a Blacksmith - and Sarah married in 1877 in Eaglehawk, Bendigo, Victoria where they raised their family. In the early 1900s the family moved to Melbourne, Victoria.

John worked as a Blacksmith's Labourer, and in September 1914 he enlisted briefly in the AIF (Private; Service No:805) attached to 14th Infantry Battalion - Discharging in October that year. In January 1915 John re-enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:2206) with 29th Infantry Battalion. In Armentieres, France, John was WiA - a GSW to the right arm in July 1916. His arm was subsequently amputated below the elbow, and John was Discharged in March 1918.

John returned to Melbourne, Victoria and lived with his mother , working as a Labourer/Handyman until his Death in 1924.
