Colin Douglas Austin was born on 7 Dec 1870 at Brisbane, Queensland, a son to Robert Austin and Sophia Catherine Austin (nee Douglas). He married Mabel Pye in 1914 at Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted under the name of Colin Austin in 1901 for the South African (Boer) War prior to which he had been in the Townsville area working as an Abattoir Inspector.

He served in both the Boer War and WW1. First service was as a Captain in the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Second service was as a Lieutenant Hon Captain rising to Major in the 3rd Infantry Battalion AIF, WW1, during which he was killed in action at Gallipoli on 6 Aug 1915. His previous Boer War service is noted on page 56 of his WW1 service record held by National Archives Australia.
