Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Raymond Thomas Farrell’s enlisted in October 1917, some 14 months after his younger brother, 1256 Pte. Roy Henry Farrell 26th Battalion AIF, had died of wounds inflicted at Pozieres during August 1916, aged 22. They had both been working on a family orchard on Bruny Island, Tasmania.

Private Raymond Farrell only embarked from Australia on 21 February 1918. He was killed in action seven months later on 18 September 1918 and buried in the Jeancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, at Aisne, France. They were the sons of Clement and Emily Augusta Farrell, of Lunawanna, South Bruny, Tasmania, though their mother gave Hobart as their place of association.

The Hobart Mercury reported October 1918, “Mr. and Mrs. C. Farrell of Rayville, Lunawanna, have been officially informed that their son, Lance-Corporal Raymond Thomas Farrell was killed in action "somewhere in France" on September l8. He enlisted from Lunawanna in October, 1917, and left Tasmania on February 21 last. He is the second of Mr. and Mrs. Farrell's sons to render the supreme sacrifice, Sergeant Roy H. Farrell having died of wounds on August 20, 1916. Of the 58 volunteers from Bruny Island, Lance Corporal Farrell is the twenty-first to lay down his life for the Empire and liberty's cause.”

Both sons made wills to their mother, Emily, who also endured the loss of her husband, Clement, during 1919.
