Biography contributed by John Oakes

Albert Rue was born in 1890 at Glanmire via Bathurst. He was first appointed to the NSW Railways as a fettler in the Permanent Way Branch on 30th June 1913. He worked as a fettler (track worker) between Emu Plains and Raglan.

He enlisted at Lithgow on 7th August 1915. As he was nor married, he gave his father Colin, who was  living at Raglan, as his next of kin. Initially he was allotted to the 9th Reinforcements to the 19th Battalion. He embarked on HMAT ‘Runic’ at Sydney on 20th January 1916, reaching Alexandria on 26th February. During the four months he spent undergoing further training in Egypt he was transferred to the 55th Australian Infantry Battalion base at Ferry Post. On 19th June 1916 he embarked HT ‘Caledonian’ to join the British Expeditionary Forces on the Western Front in France through Marseilles, where he passed on 29th June.

He was killed in action on 20th July 1916, probably at the Battle of Fromelles. His brother, Constable J C Rue of the Queensland Police, sought not only to learn where and how he was killed, and where he was buried, but also what were his last words.  Constable Rue did not realise the chaos of that terrible night at Fromelles when 1,917 Australian soldiers died. In addition, his father wrote to ask for details of any military funeral which had been held.

Rue has no known grave but he as in remembered at the VC Corner Australian Memorial at Fromelles.

From 10th October 1916 a pension of £1 per fortnight was granted to Albert’s mother Matilda.

- based on the Australian War Memorial Honour Roll and notes for the Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board.
