Research conducted has not confirmed any definite link Albert had with the Lobethal district. Albert embarked with his unit, the 19th Battalion from Sydney on board HMAT A54 Runic on 20 January 1916. After briefly serving in Egypt they were sent to France on H.T. Caledonian on 29 June. Albert was killed in action in France on 20 July. His father received his son’s Memorial Plaque, Memorial Scroll and personal effects between April 1917 and August 1922.
Matilda Rue, Albert’s mother, was sent a cable on 20 July 1916 reporting her son’s death, misspelling his surname as Rea, therefore, her son Constable J.C. Rue of the Glanville Police Station, Maryborough in Queensland wrote to Army Base Records seeking confirmation of Albert’s death.
