Private Joseph John Massey (Service No:7012) served in the AIF from 2 October 1916 with 8th Infantry Battalion. Private Massey embarked from Melbourne for Plymouth on 23 November 1916 on board HMAT A20 Hororata, and embarked from England for the RTA on 26 September 1917. Private Massey was attached to 8th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 17 May 1918.
Born in 1888 in Corowa NSW, Joseph was fifth of nine children of William Hand Massey (b1857 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Charlotte Eastwick (b1859 in Sydney, NSW). William (a Farmer) and Charlotte married in 1880 in Wahgunyah, Victoria (across the river from Corowa, NSW) and settled in Corowa where they raised their family and William was a Farmer.
Joe worked as a Farm Labourer in Junee, NSW and in 1914 in Corowa, married Eileen Muriel Costello (b1888 in Gooramadda, Victoria) - Eileen was working in Corowa as a Barmaid. Following Joe's service in WWI, he and Eileen Divorced in 1920 - Joe had been hospitalised in Melbourne and worked for a few months in QLD Cane Cutting, before starting work in 1921 as a Municipal Gardener. In 1921 in Melbourne, Joe married Amy Janet Walsh (b1895 in Violet Town, Victoria) - Amy had been working in Melbourne as a Nurse. Joe and Amy settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and Joe was a Municipal Gardener. Amy died in 1953 and Joe in 1958.
