Albert Ernest Kernick (SN1777) was born in Sebastopol and attended the Sebastopol State School. He was a 24-year-old, single, Labourer when he enlisted 4th October 1915. He was assigned to the 5th Infantry Battalion and embarked for active service in May 1916. He was killed on 12th May 1917 during the Second Battle of Bullecourt, has no known grave, and his name is on listed on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.

Miss Kernick, of Albert street, Sebastopol, has been notified by the Defence Department that her brother, Pte A. E. Kernick, has been wounded in  France. Pte Kernick sailed from Australia about 12 months ago with 1st Reinforcements for the 59th Battalion. Another brother, Pte J. Kernick, one of  the original Anzacs, is still fighting in France.

Miss Kernick, of Albert street, Sebastopol, has been notified through the Rev. Mr McDonalds, of St. Andrew's that her brother,  Pte A. E. (Bert)  Kernick, was killed in action on 12th May last. Pte Kernick, who was previously reported wounded and missing, enlisted in 1915, and left Australia in May, 1916. He was attached to the 58th Battalion. The deceased soldier was a native of Sebastopol, and was educated at the local State school.  Another brother, Pte. J. Kernick, has been on active service since August, 1914.
