Biography

Richard Williamson was the third eldest of six children born to David McLaws Williamson and Mary Ann Williamson (nee Wilson). Richard’s father died prior to the war on 23rd September 1910 leaving Mary to raise the younger children alone.

Richard enlisted at Tatura Victoria on the 1st November 1914 and lists his occupation as a boundary rider, single and aged 23 years and 6 months. He indicates that his widowed mother MA Williamson who lives in Kyabram is his next of kin and that he has been a member of a rifle club for 2 years.

Driver Williamson was an excellent horseman and when the circus came to his home town they would dare the local townspeople to ride the wild brumbies they brought with them. Richard would accept the challenges and would always succeed in staying mounted on horseback.

His unit embarked for war from Melbourne, Victoria on Board Transport A16 Star of Victoria on the 25th February 1915. He saw service in both Egypt and Gallipoli. Driver Williamson was killed in action on the Gallipoli Peninsula on the 7th August 1915. There is no known grave, however his name is engraved on a plaque at (No. 6) Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey – Remembrance Plate No.7.

Medals awarded to Richard included the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
