Henry was the eldest of seven children of Henry (Harry) David Austin (born 1856 in York, WA) and Amelia Ann Nelson (born 1867 in York, WA). Henry's two younger brothers also served in the AIF in WWI - Edwin and Leslie.

Henry was farming in York WA when he enlisted in Helena Vale in WA in 1914, He served with the 11th Battalion A Coy 3rd Brigade as a Corporal (Service No: 1101) at Gallipoli Peninsula and in France, where he was KIA in May 1918. Henry is buried at the Borre British Cemetery at Hazebrouvk in France, and his name is located at Panel 61 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial.

Henry married Mary Hatherly in 1921 in Frematle, WA, and Mary continued to live in Fremantle following Henry's death.
