Service number 2611 Private Hurtle William Emery was born at Rosewater, South Australia, on 13 May 1892. He enlisted at Keswick, South Australia, on 26 May 1915, and initially served with the 8th Reinforcements of the 16th Infantry Battalion. He transferred to the 4th Australian Light Trench Mortar Battery on 30 June 1916 and was killed in action at the First Battle of Bullecourt on 11 April 1917
