Private William Henry Bates (Service No:16754) enlisted in the AIF on 10 June 1916 and was attached to Army Medical Corps when he embarked from Adelaide for Devonport on board HMAT A48 Seeang Bee (his Service No on his AWM Embarkation Roll is given as 16764) on 10 February 1917. Private Bates served in France with 10th Field Ambulance, and embarked from London to Adelaide on 14 December 1918 as Nursing Staff on board HT Burmah. Private Bates was Discharged on 26 July 1919.

Born in 1892 in Northumberland England, Bill was second of nine children of William Henry Bates Snr (b1863 in Kent, England) and Catherine (Kate) Seager (b1868 in Durham, ENgland). William (a Railway Engine Cleaner) and Kate (a Rope Maker) married in 1891 in Durham, England and lived in Durham and Newcastle on Tyne where they raised their family and William worked as a Railway Engine Cleaner.

Bill started work in Northumberland as a Railway Engine Cleaner and immigrated in 1913, arriving in Adelaide, South Australia on board the Wilcannia (Bill gave his occupation as Labourer). Bill settled in Prospect, South Australia where he worked as a Cleaner with the South Australian Railways. Bill married twice - in 1920 to Bridget Theresa Cecilia Weathers (b1886 in Penfield, SA) and following her death in 1934, he remarried in 1938 to Bridget's cousin Mary Frances Naulty (b1897 at Port Pirie, SA). Bill died in 1984 and Mary in 1988.
