Died on this date – 26th May…… Frederick Harold Hollonds was born at Swifts Creek, near Cassilis, Victoria in 1897.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 8th March, 1915 as an 18 year old, single, Labourer from Swift’s Creek, Victoria.

Private Frederick Harold Hollonds, Service number 2373, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Demosthenes (A64) on 16th July, 1915 with the 8th Infantry Battalion, 7th Reinforcements. (Note: Listed on the Embarkation Roll as Hollands).

On 17th September, 1915 Private Hollonds was admitted to “1st Auxiliary Con Luna Park” with diarrhoea. He was discharged to duty at Heliopolis on 24th September, 1915.

He was to join M.E.F. (Mediterranean Expeditionary Force) from Base Details at Zeitoun (no date recorded).

Private Hollonds reported sick at Shrapnel Gully, Anzac on 16th November, 1915. He was admitted to No. 3 Field Ambulance at Anzac on 16th November, 1915 with Mumps then transferred to Casualty Clearing Station on 17th November, 1915. Private Hollonds was discharged to duty on 29th November, 1915 & rejoined 8th Battalion on 30th November, 1915.

On 7th January, 1916 Private Hollonds disembarked from Empress of Britain at Alexandria (after the evacuation of Gallipoli).

He proceeded to join B.E.F. (British Expeditionary Force) from Alexandria on 26th March, 1916 & disembarked at Marseilles, France on 31st March, 1916.

Private Frederick Harold Hollonds was wounded in action in France on 25th July, 1916. He was transferred & admitted to 1st Canadian General Hospital at Etaples, France with shrapnel wounds to arm & left thigh. Private Hollonds was discharged to 6th Convalescent Depot at Etaples on 2nd August, 1916. He was discharged to duty & classified “A” Class on 14th August, 1916.

On 16th August, 1916 Private Hollonds joined Base Depot at Etaples. He proceeded to join his Unit from Base Depot & rejoined his Battalion in Belgium on 21st September, 1916.

Private Frederick Harold Hollonds was wounded in action in France on 7th May, 1917. He was admitted to 3rd Casualty Clearing Station on 9th May, 1917. Private Hollonds was transferred & admitted to 3rd Canadian General Hospital at Boulogne, France on 20th May, 1917 with shrapnel wounds to thigh & right leg. He embarked for England on 21st May, 1917 on Hospital Ship St Denis with shrapnel wounds to thigh & right leg (leg amputated).

He was admitted to Kitchener Military Hospital, Brighton, Sussex, England on 21st May, 1917 with amputated right leg – severe.

 

Private Frederick Harold Hollonds died at 6.45 pm on 26th May, 1917 at Kitchener Military Hospital, Brighton, Sussex, England from wounds received in action in France - G.S.W. Leg & Septicaemia.

He was buried in Brighton City (Bear Road) Cemetery, East Sussex, England where 28 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
