Biography

Submitted by Madeleine Gross 15 Feb 2017

It is nearly 100 years since my grandmother's favourite brother died and I thought it was time that a descendant updated what few details of his life were known.

George (known as "Col" in his family) was the second youngest child of seven children born in 1893 to James and Susannah Ryng. James was a stone mason and at Col's birth they lived at 5 Ernest Street Hunters Hill, a house James built.  The house still stands in 2017.

James died when Col was 8 years old and his mother died whilst Col was still a teenager.

Col joined the army when he was 21 and served at Gallipoli where he was wounded. After 66 days in hospital and despite contracting Rheumatic fever he was posted to Egypt, Rouen and Marseilles and finally Belgium where he was killed at age 24 on the 8 June 1917.
