Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of John Joseph and Jane Murray.  His mother and father had both died by the time Christopher was 9 years old and he and his brother aged 11 were left orphaned.  Christopher was made a state ward and placed at St. Augustine's Orphanage in Geelong.  There he learned the trade of boot making, was a member of the famous St. Augustine's Band, which under the direction of the well-known band leader, travelled all over Australia.  He studied painting at Geelong, the Melbourne Art Gallery and Slade School of Art in London.

He served in the 1st World War as a stretcher bearer, and won the Military Medal for gallantry in the trenches of France.
