An Original Anzac awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.
106 years ago today, on the 14th August 1915, 2nd Lieutenant William Henry Lynch, 4th Battalion (Reg No-226), farmer (Walsh Island Government Dockyard, Newcastle, N.S.W.) from 5 Zara Street, Sandhills, Newcastle, New South Wales, Died of Wounds received at the Battle of Lone Pine, age 21 years 2 months.
Born at Newcastle East, New South Wales about 1893 to William John (died 1946) and Elizabeth Ann (died?) Lynch of Stevensons Avenue, off Military Road, Newcastle, N.S.W., William enlisted August 1914 at Sydney, N.S.W.
Wounded in action - 26.4.1915 (GSW right elbow), 7.8.1915 (GSW abdomen, chest, Battle of Lone Pine), William is resting at Addolorata Cemetery, Malta. Block E Plot EA Row A Grave 658.
Mr. Lynch’s name has been inscribed on the Gardner Memorial, Newcastle East Public School Roll of Honour (photo, unveiled on the 25th April 1917, 61 names originally inscribed, 83 names now inscribed, only 5 names denoted as Fallen) and the St. Mary's-Marist Bros' School (Newcastle) Honour Roll.
There is no memorial inscription on William’s father’s headstone to tell us of the supreme sacrifice of his son during The Great War, and I am unable to erect a memorial cross, so I have placed poppies in remembrance of William’s service for God, King and Country. CATHOLIC 2-53. 113.
Lest We Forget.
