William John Petersen was born on 9 May 1881 at Taroom, Queensland, a son to Christian Petersen and Carolina Amelia Petersen (nee Andersen). When he enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. C. Petersen, Westwood, Qld. When he enlisted again in 1915 for WW1 he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. C. Petersen, Rockhampton.
He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 158, 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Private S.N. 458 in the 26th Infantry Battalion AIF, WW1.
