    12 Nov 1916: Embarked AIF WW1, Private, 6142, 1st Australian Army HQ, On the 2th November 1916 he Disembarked at Etaples, France with the 1st Australian Divisional Base Depot (1ADBD) AIF.

    10 Nov 1917: Promoted AIF WW1, Lance Corporal, 8th Infantry Battalion, On the 10th November 1917 he was Promoted in the field to Lance Corporal AIF.
    19 Feb 1918: Wounded AIF WW1, Lance Corporal, 6142, 2nd Field Ambulance, Villers-Bretonneux, He was Admitted to Hospital with Scabies & did not rejoin his unit until the 27th February 1918.
    27 Feb 1918: Transferred AIF WW1, Lance Corporal, 8th Infantry Battalion, Rejoined his unit from Hospital.
    30 Aug 1918: Honoured Military Medal, Merris (France), On the 30th August 1918 he was Awarded the Military Medal for Bravery in the Field (MM) as a result of actions taken on the 13th April 1918 to Ambush the Germans with a Machine Gun to protect his Unit from Attack.
    30 Aug 1918: Promoted AIF WW1, Corporal, 8th Infantry Battalion, As a direct result of his Bravery in Action & Military Medal Award, he was Promoted to Corporal.
    17 Apr 1919: Embarked AIF WW1, Corporal, 6142, 8th Infantry Battalion, Embarked from France bound for England.
    18 Apr 1919: Embarked AIF WW1, Corporal, 6142, 8th Infantry Battalion, Disembarked in England on the 18th April 1919

    10 Sep 1919: Discharged AIF WW1, Corporal, 6142, 8th Infantry Battalion, On the 10th September 1919, John Schmidt was Discharged from the Australian Army. Awarded the Military Medal. Last active posting - 8th Infantry Battalion AIF.
