Henry Gordon Browne was the son of Charles Herbert and Lillia Victoria Browne, of Ascot, Queensland. He was born and raised in Armidale, New South Wales.

His older brother, 2121 Sergeant Charles Arden Browne 19th Battalion AIF died of wounds in France on 27 February 1917, aged 24.

Henry Gordon Brown was a bank clerk with the Lidcombe branch of the City Bank of Sydney prior to enlisting. He had attended Armidale Public School.
