Emil left Australia on 27 October 1915 and was sent to France per
Caledonian on 29 June 1916 with the 3rd Battalion. He was
hospitalised with appendicitis at Rouen on 11 August. Emil was
promoted to the rank of temporary Corporal on 16 October serving
with the 5th Australian Field Butchery.
A bout of diarrhoea led to a two –week period of hospitalisation at
Rouen, with Emil able to rejoin his unit on 26 May 1917. At his own
request, he reverted to his former rank of Private on 6 January
1918. From 29 August to 31 August Emil was on leave in France and
in May 1919 returned to Australia per City of Poona. Emil Schultz
was discharged on 5 July.
Emil married Meta Beckman – in the above photo Emil is the 1st
from the right, with Meta next to him. They had three children –
Betty Patricia, Trevor Cedric and Mostyn Claude. Emil was allotted
land at Moppa through the repatriation scheme, where he had a
vineyard and also grew fruit. He died on 22 March 1977, aged 82.
