Biography contributed by Aubrey Bairstow

Percy Lisle was born south of Brisbane and was a 24 year old Senior Linesman with the Post and Telegraph Department when he enlisted in the AIF in August 1915.

He was posted to the 15th Battalion and trained with his regiment in Egypt before transferring to the 47th Battalion at Tel El Kebir in March 1916. Over the year he rose steadily through the ranks and in July 1917 whilst serving in Belgium, he was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant.

After further training in England he was posted to the 45th Battalion with whom he served in the closing battles of the war.

Percy Lisle was awarded the Military Cross for bravery at Hamel. The citation states:

“For conspicuous gallantry during operations at Hamel on the 8th August 1918. Throughout the attack he led his platoon with great dash and skill. When held up by the enemy machine gun fire he gallantly advanced with his platoon and succeeded in capturing the machine guns and crews. By this daring action he prevented many casualties from being inflicted on his Company and thus allowed the advance to continue. After the capture of the second objective he led a battle patrol with great pluck and determination and by his resolute action dislodged an enemy post and gained the objective.”

He was discharged in September 1919.

During WW2 he served as a Lieutenant (Q155033) in the Signals / Post and Telegraph Department – by which stage he was an Inspector with the Post and Telegraph. Percy Lisle died in Brisbane in 1958.
