Thomas's parents were Gabriel Strain and Jessie Ann McCaskill who both gave their consent for him to enlist as he was under age. The Strain family was early pioneers of the area. Thomas attended Terrors Creek State School and was the first pupil to enlist on 12 August 1915 at Brisbane. He was a presented with a pair of military brushes and a fountain pen at the School before he left. Thomas married Harriet Elizabeth Kuhn who was from a local pioneering family in 1923. His brother Gabriel Strain [3545A] enlisted as well he also returned home.
