Leslie Percy Keane was born in 1896 on the 4th of July. He was born and grew up in Gawler South Australia with his mother Mary Julia Keane and his father John Richard Keane and two older brothers James Edward Keane and Leonard john Kean who also served in World War 1. He was 19 years old weighing 118 pounds, with a fair complexion with brown hair and hazel eyes. Before the war he served as an apprentice for 6 years for the May Brothers which was an engineering and manufacturing company that was established in Gawler in 1885. He had previous military experience with 2 years in the cadets and 2 years with the 79th Infantry.
Leslie Percy Keane enlisted on the 22nd of January 1916 in Adelaide. He was assigned service number 2645 and joined the 32nd Infantry Battalion. He embarked from Adelaide aboard HMAT Shropshire on March 25th, 1916.
On the 12th of October 1917 his medical records state he was wounded in action and remained on duty. He was then involved in a train accident on the 16th of December 1917 and was admitted to the hospital on the 24th of December 1917. During his service he spent over a year on the Western Front in France.
Leslie returned to Australia on the 22nd of May 1919 and was discharged from the AIF on the first of September 1919.
After the war Leslie lived his life in Gawler South Australia and married Jean Keane and had three children named Betty, Kevin and Fay Keane. He worked as a tinsmith and a telegraph linesman, including employment with the postmaster-generals department (PMG).
He passed away on the 30th of January 1960 at 63 years old from natural causes in Norwood South Australia and he is buried at West Terrace cemetery at Kendrew Oval, Row 21A, Site Number 45 Adelaide.
