HERBERT LIONEL INGLE FINCH was the son of Mr. E. H. Finch, Manager of the Bank of New South Wales at Queanbeyan, and Mrs. Finch. He was  born on 25th April, 1885, at Cootamundra, New South Wales. He was educated at the Greenwich and Fort Street Schools, and entered the service  of the Bank on 21st December, 1902, at the Head Office. His subsequent transfers were to the Royal Exchange Branch, Sydney, in February, 1904;  Southern Branch, Sydney, in July, 1908; North Sydney Branch, in December, 1909; Perth, W.A., in October, 1910; Fremantle, W.A., in February,  1911.
He enlisted immediately on the outbreak of war and embarked for Egypt with the 11th Battalion. Private Finch took part in the Landing at Gallipoli,  and was amongst the party that scaled the heights. Expecting reinforcements, they went too far inland and had to retreat, and as Private Finch  turned round to fire he was shot in the body, and died of his wounds a few days later.
