Driver Charles Edward Thomas (Service No:12021) enlisted in the AIF as a Private on 1 October 1915 with Divisional Ammunition Column 1, Reinforcement 14. Gunner Thomas was attached to A Depot Stores (Egypt) when he embarked with his Unit from Fremantle for Egypt on 28 January 1916 on board HMAT A32 Themistocles. Gunner Thomas then served in France with 12th Australian Field Artillery Brigade and embarked from England for Fremantle on 4 June 1919 on board HT Bremen. Driver Thomas was attached to 12th Field Artillery Brigade at Discharge on 7 September 1919. He served in WWII as a Corporal (Service No:W243243) attached to 10 and 29 Garrison Battalions (WA) VDC.
Charles was born in Victoria Park, Fremantle in 1899, sixth of eleven children of Watkin (William) Wynn Thomas (b1861 in Worcestershire, England) and Mary Elizabeth Avery (b1863 in Warwickshire, England). William was a Draper in Melbourne in 1890 when he and Mary married - Mary had arrived in Melbourne earlier that year on board the Oruba. In 1898 William and Mary moved to Victoria Park, Fremantle, WA where they settled and raised their family and William was a Draper/Storekeeper.
Charles worked as a Printer in Perth before enlisting in the AIF, and following his Discharge, returned to Perth where, in 1922, he married Cramlintyne (Caroline) Stephens (b1901 in Boulder, WA). Charles and Caroline settled in Perth, where they raised their family and Charles worked as a Printer, Bread Carter, Tramways Employee and Labourer until his death in 1952. Caroline died in 1966.
