Plaque Dedication By family of Ernests mate

Private Ernest William McGlinn was born at York in 1885, one of six sons and eight daughters of David and Sarah McGlinn.

Little is known of his early life or education and sporting interests. He was working as a cleaning contractor when he joined the AIF.

Ernest was a very good mate to Private William Patrick Kett, whose plaque is located next to Ernest’s. It is not known when Ernest and William became good friends but from the records that exist it is apparent that William lived with the McGlinn family for a time and that Ernest was helping William to support his mother.

Ernest enlisted in the AIF in March 1915 and was assigned to 11 Battalion reinforcements. After initial training at Blackboy Hill Camp, he embarked on HMAT Geelong from Fremantle bound for Egypt in June 1915.

On 4 August Ernest, with other reinforcements was landed on Gallipoli. Two days later he was severely wounded and evacuated to Egypt on a hospital ship, arriving on 12 August.

Private Ernest William McGlinn, service number 2263 of 11 Battalion, died of wounds at 15 General Hospital Alexandria, Egypt on 13 August 1915. He was 29 years of age.

He is buried at Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Alexandria, Egypt.
