Vernon Alfred Charles BATCHELOR was born on 10th April, 1892 in Nubena, Tasmania
His parents were Jabez BATCHELOR and Sarah Ann JONES
He enlisted on 2nd February, 1916 as a Driver and embarked with the 25th Howitzer Brigade, 4th reinforcements on 1st August, 1916 on the HMAT Orsova
He was transferred to 22nd Field Artillery Brigade/117th Howitzer Battery, 2nd Division on 26th October, 1916 - reverted to a Gunner on 1st January, 1917 and then transferred to the 4th Field Artillery Brigade, 104th Battery on 3rd May, 1917
Vernon was listed as Wounded & missing in Belgium on 4th October, 1917 and later listed as Killed in Action after he was hit with a shell
He is buried in Birr Cross Roads Cemetery in Belgium & his name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial - he is also remembered at the Nubeena Avenue of Honour in Tasmania
He was awarded the British War Medal & the Victory Medal.
