Biography contributed by Mick MILLER

Albert was born Port Melbourne in 1891 to Franz Oscar BERGSTROM and Catherine BERGSTROM (nee UNCLES)

Prior to enlistment Albert worked at the British Australian Tobacco Company in Stewart St, Melbourne.

At the time of his enlistment Albert was married to Rosalind (GLEESON),  also know as "Prim", and they had one young son - Albert, who was born in 1916. It was noted on Albert's enlistment papers that his father (Franz) had been born in Sweden and that  Albert and his family were residing at 33 Dryburgh St, West Melbourne.

Albert was allocated to the 19th Reinforcements draft for the 14th Battalion and on August 1916 departed Australia for England.

On the 17th January 1917 Albert, after a period in England, arrived in France as was transferred to the 46th Battalion.

On the 11th April 1917 Albert was wounded in action suffering a GSW to left arm, wound to right arm and scalp. After a period of recovery Albert returned to France however whilst training it was reported he was suffering from fatigue and shortness of breath and was subsequently diagnosed with a febrile condition, possibly influenza.

Albert was later deemed unfit for further military service and was returned to Australia on the "Suevic" arriving back on the 20th November 1918. Albert was then made a patient of the Caulfield Military Hospital whilst residing at 255 Bell St, Coburg and later 3 Anketell St, Coburg with his wife and son.

Albert's health deteriorated resulting in him being paralysed on the left side of the body and made an inpatient of the Caulfield Military Hospital.

On the 10th December 1919, after persistent demands by Albert and his wife, Albert was returned home to be with his family having been informed he had only weeks to live. Urgent funding was sought on their behalf to cover nursing costs to assist the family at home as Rosalind was on only meagre wages.

On the 9th January, 1920 (some records incorrectly state 1st January) Albert died at home surrounded by his family and interred the following day at the Coburg Pine Ridge Cemetery.
