From Philippe Clerbout
His history and his fate touches me personally. This is the fate of Sapper James John HOOD - Regimental number: 4356.
Place of birth: Rockhampton, Queensland.
Address: Merridin, Western Australia.
Unit embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia, on board HMAT A69 Warilda on 1 June 1916.
Killed in Action 21 August 1917.
This soldier was killed while carrying out repairs on "The Fixed Bridge"
My research made me discover that the fixed bridge was located in Givenchy les La Bassée. (Some photos at the AWM)
This bridge connects the village of Givenchy les La Bassée and my native village: Cuinchy. Here is his photo album. Credit AWM and my personal collection. The photos of the undamaged bridge date from 1913 and 1914.
On the photos of the destroyed distillery, you will notice the metal balustrades and we find them on the photo of the AWM.
Lest We Forget.
