He was 23 and the son of Edward and Alice Amelia Cleland, of "Rosemoor," 13, Arthur St., Marrickville, New South Wales.

He worked for the Sydney branch of Alex Cowan and Sons, paper manufacturers, Penicuik.

He is remembered on the war memorial at Alex Cowan & Sons, Penicuik in Scotland.
