89 years ago today, on the Thursday afternoon of the 26th September 1935, Private Jerry Henry Morgan, referred to as Harry, 34th Battalion (Reg No-3090), carter (Hetton Colliery and Morison & Bearby Limited, Carrington, N.S.W.), from Hannell Street, Wickham, New South Wales and 13a Russell Road, New Lambton, N.S.W., father of 5 daughters, 3 sons, was laid to rest with military honours at Sandgate Cemetery, age 54. METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) K SE. 39.
Born at West Maitland, New South Wales on the 31st March 1881 to David and Mary J or Jane Morgan; husband of Mary Ann Morgan nee Lodwick, married 23.4.1917, Glebe, N.S.W., died 28.2.1984, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 95, 49 years a widow, sleeping here, from 91 Waratah Road, Broadmeadow, New South Wales, Harry enlisted on the 13th October 1916 with the 36th Battalion, as Harry, at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 10th May 1917.
Admitted to hospital 9.10.1917 (pleurisy), 19.1.1918 (bronchitis), 27.2.1918 (not stated), 5.6.1918 (gastric), 16.7.1918 (scabies).
Granted furlough from 9.2.1918 to 23.2.1918.
Wounded in action - 24.4.1918 (gassed, severe, Villers Bretonneux).
Commenced return to Australia 4.12.1918.
Harry was invalided home on the 15th January 1919, being discharged on the 27th June 1919.
Mr. Morgan’s name has been inscribed on the Newcastle and District Firemen Honour Roll, Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (2), Morison & Bearby Limited Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at Harry’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
