William Lachlan Campbell was born on 17 August 1879 at Toowoomba, Queensland, a son to Lachlan Malcolm Alexander Campbell and Fanny Maria Campbell (nee Snell). He married Mabel Hodges on 21 Jun 1919 in Queensland and they had at least 2 Children.
He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 14 in the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Private S.N. 5367 in the 12th Infantry Battalion AIF, WW1. He was wounded during his Boer War service and again wounded twice during his WW1 service.
