Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 25th July 1916, Sergeant William Bell, 11th Battalion (Reg No-1910), police constable (Merredin, Western Australia), from Merredin, Western Australia, was Killed in Action by an enemy artillery shell, Battle of Pozieres, age 28.

Born at West Maitland, New South Wales on the 17th November 1887 to Joseph (died 26.5.1919, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 61) and Mary Ann Dunn Bell nee Dixon (died 24.7.1918, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 65) of 76 Patrick Street, Merewether, (Junction) New South Wales, William enlisted on the 1st February 1915 at Merredin, Western Australia.

Unit embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 26th April 1915.
Admitted to hospital 2.9.1915 (dysentery).

Wounded in action - 12.6.1916 (bomb wound, face).

Rejoined Battalion 21.6.1916.

Reported missing 25.7.1916.

Mr. Bell’s name has been inscribed on the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, France.

Place of Association - Merredin, Western Australia, Australia.

William’s name has also been inscribed on the Junction Soldiers' Monument, Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates, Hamilton Star of Rechabites Tent No. 80 Roll of Honour, Hamilton Mechanics' Institute Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the 3rd Australian Garrison Artillery Roll of Honour or the Merredin War Memorial.

I have placed poppies at the memorialised Bell gravesite in remembrance of the service and supreme sacrifice of their son for God, King & Country. METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) E NW. 60.

Younger brother George Herbert (born 6.10.1889, The Junction, New South Wales, labourer from Maryville, New South Wales and 76 Patrick Street, The Junction, N.S.W. and 2 Wyvern Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., enlisted 11.9.1915, 31st Battalion, Reg No-2272, wounded in action - 12.10.1916 (GSW right thigh), RTA 24.9.1917, died 10.8.1946, age 56, ANGLICAN 2-129. 63, no headstone, wooden cross erected - 29.6.2014, now destroyed, new cross erected - 4.8.2021). I submitted an application to DVA September 2021 asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip, and this was accepted October 2021, completed October 2023.
