Biography

"Mr. J. Whelan has received letters in confirmation of the death of his son Private Bernard J. D. Whelan. The Major for the Military District writes:—

"I am directed to convey to you the deep regret and sympathy of their Majesties the King and Queen and the Commonwealth Government in the less that you and the Army have sustained by the death of this soldier."

T. H. Justice, C. of E. Chaplain, writes from France:—

"Dear Mr. Whelan, — I want to tell you a little about the death of your son, No. 4307 Pte. B. J. Whelan of the 4oth Batt., A.I.F., who was killed in action by enemy gunfire on 2/6/18. I am sure you will be comforted to know that your son gave his life for God and country like a true Austra- lian soldier and a very brave man. May God rest his soul in peace. As far as I can learn your son did notsuffer much at all. He was buried by his comrades out near where he fell, and later I trust a cross will be erected to mark his restiug place. The grave location is Sheet 62D S.W. 018 C27. May I express my heartfelt sympathy with you and yours in your great loss. God give you His comfort." - from the Candelo Southern Record and Advertiser 21 Sep 1918 (nla.gov.au)
