Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
66 years ago today, on the 16th November 1959, Private George Ferry, 30th Battalion (Reg No-3370), labourer from Yass Junction, Yass, New South Wales or Wingello, N.S.W. and Gundy, N.S.W. (1935) and 11 Park Street, Mayfield, N.S.W. (1939) and 28 Lewis Street, Maryville, N.S.W. (1953), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 66. CATHOLIC 3-81. 111.
Never married.
Born at Warialda, New South Wales on the 16th October 1893 to John, died? and Fanny Ann Ferry, died?, George enlisted on the 15th February 1916 at Goulburn, N.S.W.
Disembarked Suez, Egypt 9.6.1916.
Granted leave to England from 31.1.1918 to 14.2.1918.
Wounded in action - 19.7.1918 (gassed).
Invalided to England 1.8.1918.
Admitted to hospital 2.8.1918 (gassed, dangerously ill).
Commenced return to Australia on HT Orsova 8.1.1919.
George arrived home invalided on the 20th February 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 17th April 1919.
Mr. Ferry’s name has been inscribed on the Tamworth and District Second World War Monument and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at George’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Also served 2nd A.I.F., enlisted 13.10.1939, Newcastle, N.S.W., Service No-N67739, Private, 2nd Garrison Battalion, discharged 7.9.1946.
Not officially commemorated.
