A blacksmith from Long Gully, Bendigo, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte 3967 Alfred Charles Williams embarked with the 12th Reinforcements, 5th Battalion from Melbourne on HMAT Ceramic on 23 November 1915.
Later transferring to the 2nd Machine Gun Company as a Driver and then to the 1st Machine Gun Battalion, he was killed in action during the German Spring Offensive on 13 April 1918 at Hazebrouck and was buried in the Hazebrouck Communal Cemetery, France.
His brother, 41 Sapper John Henry Williams, 4th Field Company Engineers was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.
