William Higgins was among the first men to enlist from Coolah, New South Wales. From information in his Red Cross file, he appears to have been sniped in the trenches near Australia Gully.
His youngest brother Albert Higgins was only 19 years of age when his elder brother William Higgins died at the age of 27 at Gallipoli. Albert enlisted soon after and died of wounds three years later, to the day, on the 9 August 1918, aged 22.
Another brother, 4794 Corporal John Thomas Higgins, 53rd Battalion, returned to Australia in 1919.
