Private Gerald Cedric Smith (Service No:7801) enlisted with his father's consent on 10 May 1917 and was attached to the 12th Infantry Battalion when he embarked from Melbourne for Glasgow on 4 August 1917 on board HMAT Themistocles A32. Private Smith transferred to the 40th Infantry Battalion in France on 27 February 1918 and was WiA (shrapnel wounds to his leg and arm) on 5 April 1918. Invalided to England, Private Smith embarked for Melbourne on 11 December 1918 on board HT Saxon and was Discharged in Hobart on 23 March 1919.

Born in Oatlands, Tasmania in 1897 Joe was the ninth of thirteen children of George Thomas Smith (b1859 in Oatlands, Tasmania) and Mary Ann Diaper-Scanlan (b1865 in Oatlands, Tasmania). George (a Labourer) and Mary Ann (a Domestic Servant) married in 1882 in Oatlands, Tasmania where they settled and raised their family and George was a Labourer.

Joe was a Labourer when he enlisted for Service in WWI and his stated occupation in the Electoral Rolls was 'Soldier' until his death. In 1920 in Launceston Joe married Louisa (Louie) Letoska Colgrave (b1903 in Evandale, Tasmania). Joe and Louie settled in Evandale where Joe died in 1925. Louie died in 1996.
