Thomas Henry A MUSGROVE was born on 9th December 1885 in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood. He attended Bathurst Public School. It is not known when he married but the birth of his son Thomas Reginald A Musgrove was registered at Sydney in 1907.
He joined the NSW Government Railways and Tramways on 21st May 1909 as a labourer in the Metropolitan District of the Railways’ Permanent Way Branch. On 2nd November 1910 his position changed to spiker. He became a fettler on 9th May 1911, based initially at Wyaldra then, from 22nd May 1911, at Warrobil before taking up duty at Mudgee on 28th August 1911. On 4th September 1915, he was released to join the Expeditionary Forces.
Thomas joined the AIF on 18th August 1915 with the rank of Private (Service Number 3856). He was initially posted to the 12th Reinforcements to the 13th Infantry Battalion. He nominated his wife, still living at Mudgee, as his next of kin.
He embarked for Egypt aboard HMAT A29 ‘Suevic’ at Sydney on 22nd December 1915. On 6th March 1916 he was transferred to the 45th Infantry Battalion, then based at Tel-el-Kebir (Egypt). On 3rd May 1916 he was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.
With his unit, he left Alexandria in Egypt for France on 2nd June 1916, disembarking at Marseilles six days later. On 20th June 1916, at Bailleul in France, he reported sick with pharyngitis, and was admitted to the 12th Australian Field Ambulance station at Outtersteene. The next day, on 21st June 1916, he was transferred to the 12th Causalty Clearing Station, having been diagnosed as suffering from acute tonsillitis. However, his recovery was speedy, and he re-joined his unit at Bailleul on 27th June 1916.
He then remained on duty until 7th August 1916 when he was killed in action at Pozières.
The site of his grave is unknown, notwithstanding an intensive effort after the end of the war, and he is commemorated at the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, Picardie, France. His place of association is Mudgee, NSW.
After his death his widow was awarded a pension of £2 per fortnight with effect from 1st November 1916 and his son was awarded a pension of £1 per fortnight with effect from the same date. By this time, they had moved to Marrickville in Sydney.
