1253 Private (Pte) Emile Vivian Hope Roche, 2nd Australian Pioneer Battalion.

Private Roche, a packer from Melbourne, Victoria, enlisted on the 30th of March 1915. On the 10th of May 1915, Roche embarked from Port Melbourne with A Company, 24th Battalion, on HMAT Euripides.

Roche landed at Gallipoli on the 30th of August 1915, where he served until the December evacuation. In March 1916, he transferred to the 2nd Pioneer Battalion, and arrived in France for service on the Western Front two weeks later.

Roche was killed in action at Flers, France on the 14th of November 1916, aged 20. Originally buried near the town of Bapaume, Roche's remains were later interred at the Warlencourt British Cemetery.
