Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

George Magnus was the son of Edward and Katherine Magnus of Kew, Victoria. The father, Edward, a baker and a German immigrant, had died in Flemington during 1892, just before George was born.

George’s older brother, 1698 Pte. Adolph Ernest Magnus, 24th Battalion AIF was killed in action at Pozieres, 29 July 1916.

George had served at Gallipoli from November 1915 and was hospitalised for shell shock at the time of the evacuation of Anzac. During April 1916 in Egypt, he transferred to the 5th Pioneer Battalion. George was wounded in action 23 October 1917 in Belgium; gunshot wounds, to the shoulder, back and face; he died three days later at a Casualty Clearing Station.

George’s mother, Katherine, died during September 1917 so all medals and entitlements went to another brother, Herman Edward Magnus, also resident of Kew, Victoria.
