Private Alfred Joseph Fisher (Service No:794) enlisted in the AIF in Brisbane (an earlier Application to Enlist had been rejected because of his eyesight) on 16 April 1917, and was attached to 3rd Machine Coy on 26 November 1917 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Southampton via Suez on board SS Indarra. Private Fisher saw service on the Western Front, and on 13 July 1919 embarked from England for Melbourne on board HT Persic. Private Fisher was attached to 3rd Machine Gun Battalion at Discharge on 21 September 1919.
Alf was born in Narrandera, New South Wales in 1892, tenth of thirteen children of Peter Fisher (b1843 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Elizabeth Jackson (b1854 in Melbourne, Victoria). Peter was fifteen years of age when he moved to Ardlethan in 1858, and worked on Barellan, Mumbledool and Bygoo Stations as a Station Hand - 'He was a great bushman, sound timber worker, and had few equals as a station hand, being able to do any class of work' (Obituary; Narandera Argus; 1935). Peter and Elizabeth married in Wagga Wagga in 1874, and settled at Ardlethan where they raised their family and Peter was a Farmer and Carpenter. The Peter Fisher Memorial Bell was erected at Barellan Public School in his honour in 1935.
Alf worked as a Labourer at Almond Flats via Ardlethan, New South Wales before enlisting in the Army. In 1917 in Sunbury, Victoria he married Veronica Ellen Falvey (b1899 at Riddells Creek, Victoria). Following his Discharge from the Army, Alf and Veronica settled in Sunbury, where they raised their family and Alf was a Labourer and, in later years, an Asylum Attendant. Veronica died in 1965 and Alf in 1967.
