70 years ago today, on the 14th November 1955, Engineer Sergeant or ER/Sgt Sydney Ernest Turner, sometimes called Sidney, Australian Army Pay Corps (Reg No-2399), accountant from awcett Street, Mayfield, New South Wales and Newcastle?, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 60. ANGLICAN 2-142. 31.
Born at Mayfield, New South Wales on the 7th July 1895 to James Price, died 10.11.1934, 41 Margaret Street, Tighes Hill, New South Wales, age 74, buried at ANGLICAN 2-142. 35, and Lucy Anna (Ann) Turner nee Bowditch, died 21.2.1943, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 88, sleeping at ANGLICAN 2-142. 37, from 41 Margaret Street, Tighes Hill, New South Wales; husband of Dorothy Brain Turner nee Stewart, married 1922, Wickham, N.S.W., died 19.4.1984, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 82, sleeping here, ANGLICAN 2-142. 33, Syd enlisted on the 20th April 1916 with the 36th Battalion at Waratah, N.S.W.
Promoted to Corporal 25.8.1916.
Transferred to Australian Army Pay Corps 17.10.1916.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 17th October 1916.
Disembarked Plymouth, England 9.1.1917.
Transferred to Australian Army Pay Corps 1.3.1917.
Admitted to hospital 17.1.1919 (influenza), 13.2.1919 (influenza).
Promoted to Engineer Sergeant or ER/Sgt 11.6.1919.
Commenced return to Australia 15.11.1919.
Syd did not arrive home until the 9th January 1920, being discharged on the 23rd February 1920.
Did not serve in a theatre of war, therefore was not granted Victory Medal.
Mr. Turner’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1). Mayfield did not produce a Municipal District Roll of Honor.
I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at Syd’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Not officially commemorated.
